Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(13) Therefore now amend your ways . . .--The prophet's apologia consists in repeating the substance of his message. He had not denounced an irreversible doom. He had held out the assurance of pardon on repentance. He had threatened only to bring about repentance. The whole history reminds us of the accusation brought against One greater than Jeremiah. He had foretold a destruction of the Second Temple as complete as that of Shiloh (Luke 19:44). He, too, was accused of having said that He would destroy the Temple (Matthew 26:61). And He, foreseeing that the people would not repent, had pronounced, though not publicly, a sentence on the Temple which succeeded that against which Jeremiah had prophesied, which was irrevocable (Matthew 24:2; Mark 13:2; Luke 19:44).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSo now,וְעַתָּ֗ה (wə·‘at·tāh)Conjunctive waw | AdverbStrong's 6258: At this timecorrectהֵיטִ֤יבוּ (hê·ṭî·ḇū)Verb - Hifil - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 3190: To be good, well, glad, or pleasingyour waysדַרְכֵיכֶם֙ (ḏar·ḵê·ḵem)Noun - common plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 1870: A road, a course of life, mode of actionand deedsוּמַ֣עַלְלֵיכֶ֔ם (ū·ma·‘al·lê·ḵem)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 4611: A deed, practiceand obeyוְשִׁמְע֕וּ (wə·šim·‘ū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlythe voiceבְּק֖וֹל (bə·qō·wl)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 6963: A voice, soundof the LORDיְהוָ֣ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelyour God,אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם (’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeso that Heיְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelmight relentוְיִנָּחֵ֣ם (wə·yin·nā·ḥêm)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5162: To sigh, breathe strongly, to be sorry, to pity, console, rue, to avengeofאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe disasterהָ֣רָעָ֔ה (hā·rā·‘āh)Article | Adjective - feminine singularStrong's 7451: Bad, evilthatאֲשֶׁ֥ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatHe has pronouncedדִּבֶּ֖ר (dib·ber)Verb - Piel - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1696: To arrange, to speak, to subdueagainst you.עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ (‘ă·lê·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstJump to PreviousActions Amend Better Change Decision Deeds Doings Evil Hearken Mind Misfortune Obey Pronounced Reform Relent Repent Turned Voice Ways
