Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English ReadersXXVI.(1) In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim.--The section which follows is among the earlier fragments of the book, some three years before that of the preceding chapter. It will be noted that there is no mention of the Chaldaeans, and that Jehoiakim is on friendly terms with Egypt (Jeremiah 26:22). This points to the very earliest period of his reign. The chapter that follows, though referred to the same period in the present Hebrew text, really belongs to the reign of Zedekiah. (See Note on Jeremiah 27:1.) The common element that led the compiler of the book to bring the narratives together is the conflict of Jeremiah with the false prophets.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAt the beginningבְּרֵאשִׁ֗ית (bə·rê·šîṯ)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 7225: The first, in place, time, order, rankof the reignמַמְלְכ֛וּת (mam·lə·ḵūṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 4468: Dominion, the estate, the countryof Jehoiakimיְהוֹיָקִ֥ים (yə·hō·w·yā·qîm)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3079: Jehoiakim -- 'the LORD raises up', three Israelitessonבֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Josiahיֹאשִׁיָּ֖הוּ (yō·šî·yā·hū)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 2977: Josiah -- 'Yah supports', two Israeliteskingמֶ֣לֶךְ (me·leḵ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4428: A kingof Judah,יְהוּדָ֑ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israelitesthisהַזֶּ֔ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatwordהַדָּבָ֣ר (had·dā·ḇār)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causecameהָיָה֙ (hā·yāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, befrom the LORD:יְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelJump to PreviousBeginning Early First Jehoiakim Jehoi'akim Josiah Josi'ah Judah Reign Word
