Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(22) Let a cry be heard from their houses.--i.e., let their city be taken by the enemy and the people suffer all the outrage and cruelty which their heathen invaders can inflict. What these were, the history of all wars, above all of Eastern wars, tells us but too plainly (2Kings 8:12; Hosea 13:16). Some of them, prisoners impaled or flayed alive, are brought vividly before our eyes by the Assyrian sculptures. The "snares" are those of the bird-catcher (Psalm 140:5; Psalm 142:3).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewLet a cryזְעָקָה֙ (zə·‘ā·qāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2201: A shriek, outcrybe heardתִּשָּׁמַ֤ע (tiš·šā·ma‘)Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyfrom their housesמִבָּ֣תֵּיהֶ֔ם (mib·bāt·tê·hem)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 1004: A housewhenכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionYou suddenlyפִּתְאֹ֑ם (piṯ·’ōm)AdverbStrong's 6597: Suddenness, suddenlybringתָבִ֧יא (ṯā·ḇî)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goraidersגְּד֖וּד (gə·ḏūḏ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1416: A band, troopagainst them,עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (‘ă·lê·hem)Preposition | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstforכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthey have dugכָר֤וּ (ḵā·rū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 3738: To dig, to plot, to bore, opena pitשׁוּחָה֙ (šū·ḥāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 7882: A pit-fallto capture meלְלָכְדֵ֔נִי (lə·lā·ḵə·ḏê·nî)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | first person common singularStrong's 3920: To catch, to capture, occupy, to choose, to cohereand have hiddenטָמְנ֥וּ (ṭā·mə·nū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 2934: To hide, concealsnaresוּפַחִ֖ים (ū·p̄a·ḥîm)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 6341: A, sheet, a spring netfor my feet.לְרַגְלָֽי׃ (lə·raḡ·lāy)Preposition-l | Noun - fdc | first person common singularStrong's 7272: A foot, a step, the pudendaJump to PreviousArmed Band Capture Cry Digged Dug Feet Heard Help Hid Hidden Hole Houses Laid Nets Outcry Pit Raiders Secretly Snares Suddenly Troop
