Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(14) I will make thee to pass with thine enemies . . .--The Hebrew text is probably corrupt, and a slight variation of the reading of one word brings the verse into harmony with the parallel passage of Jeremiah 17:4, and gives a better meaning, I will make thee serve thine enemies in a land thou dost not know. As it stands without the pronoun "thee" in the Hebrew we may take it, with some commentators, as meaning, I will make them (the "treasures" of Jeremiah 15:13) pass with thine enemies . . .A fire is kindled in mine anger.--Another quotation from Deuteronomy (Deuteronomy 32:22).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThen I will enslave youוְהַֽעֲבַרְתִּי֙ (wə·ha·‘ă·ḇar·tî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 5674: To pass over, through, or by, pass ontoאֶת־ (’eṯ-)PrepositionStrong's 854: Nearness, near, with, by, at, amongyour enemiesאֹ֣יְבֶ֔יךָ (’ō·yə·ḇe·ḵā)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 341: Hating, an adversaryin a landבְּאֶ֖רֶץ (bə·’e·reṣ)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landyou do notלֹ֣א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noknow,יָדָ֑עְתָּ (yā·ḏā·‘ə·tā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 3045: To knowforכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionMy angerבְאַפִּ֖י (ḇə·’ap·pî)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 639: The nose, nostril, the face, a person, irewill kindleקָדְחָ֥ה (qā·ḏə·ḥāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 6919: To be kindled, kindlea fireאֵ֛שׁ (’êš)Noun - common singularStrong's 784: A firethat will burnתּוּקָֽד׃ (tū·qāḏ)Verb - Hofal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 3344: To be kindled, to burnagainst you.”עֲלֵיכֶ֥ם (‘ă·lê·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstJump to PreviousAnger Burn Burning Cause Caused Enemies Enslave Fire Flame Haters Kindle Kindled Nostril Serve Strange Wrath
