Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(7) It would be more in accordance with the Hebrew idiom to render, The dwellers under its shadow shall once more cause the corn to grow. The word translated "scent" (margin, "memorial") should be renown. The form of these promises is derived from the external signs of national prosperity. (Comp. Hosea 12:10.) But corn and wine are throughout the Scriptures the great symbols of spiritual refreshment, and are still the memorials of the supreme love of Him whose body was broken and whose blood was shed for us.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThey will returnיָשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ (yā·šu·ḇū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againand dwellיֹשְׁבֵ֣י (yō·šə·ḇê)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryin his shade;בְצִלּ֔וֹ (ḇə·ṣil·lōw)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6738: A shadowthey will growיְחַיּ֥וּ (yə·ḥay·yū)Verb - Piel - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 2421: To live, to revivegrainדָגָ֖ן (ḏā·ḡān)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1715: Corn, grain (of cereals)and blossomוְיִפְרְח֣וּ (wə·yip̄·rə·ḥū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 6524: To break forth as a, bud, bloom, to spread, to fly, to flourishlike the vine.כַגָּ֑פֶן (ḵag·gā·p̄en)Preposition-k, Article | Noun - common singularStrong's 1612: A vine, the grapeHis renown will beזִכְר֖וֹ (ziḵ·rōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2143: A memento, recollection, commemorationlike the wineכְּיֵ֥ין (kə·yên)Preposition-k | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3196: Wine, intoxicationof Lebanon.לְבָנֽוֹן׃ (lə·ḇā·nō·wn)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3844: Lebanon -- a wooded mountain range on the northern border of IsraelJump to PreviousBeneath Blossom Corn Dwell Flourish Flowers Fragrance Grain Grow Lebanon Raise Renown Rest Revive Scent Shade Shadow Sit Thereof Vine Wine
