Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(5) In the land of Canaan.--We find Esau with a band of armed men in Seir on Jacob's return from Padan-aram, but he still had his home at Hebron with his father until Isaac's death, twenty-two years afterwards. Evidently he had taken Aholibamah home thither, and she had borne him three sons. After Isaac's death the land of Seir had so great attractions for him that he migrated thither with his share of Isaac's wealth, and left Hebron to Jacob, who now moved down thither from the town of Eder, and took possession of the homestead of his fathers. And thus the inheritance of the birthright came finally to Jacob by. Esau's own act, and would doubtless have so come to him; only his father's blessing and the transference to him of the Abrahamic promises would have been given him, not at the time of Isaac's temporary illness, but on his deathbed.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewand Oholibamahוְאָהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ (wə·’ā·ho·lî·ḇā·māh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 173: Oholibamah -- 'tent of the high place', wife of Esau, also an Edomite leadergave birth toיָֽלְדָ֔ה (yā·lə·ḏāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 3205: To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineageJeush,יְע֥וּשׁ (yə·‘ūš)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3266: Jeush -- 'he comes to help', an Edomite, also the name of several IsraelitesJalam,יַעְלָ֖ם (ya‘·lām)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3281: Jalam -- an Edomiteand Korah.קֹ֑רַח (qō·raḥ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7141: Korah -- an Edomite name, also an Israelite nameTheseאֵ֚לֶּה (’êl·leh)Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, those[were] the sonsבְּנֵ֣י (bə·nê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Esau,עֵשָׂ֔ו (‘ê·śāw)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6215: Esau -- oldest son of Isaacwhoאֲשֶׁ֥ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatwere bornיֻלְּדוּ־ (yul·lə·ḏū-)Verb - QalPass - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 3205: To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineageto him in the landבְּאֶ֥רֶץ (bə·’e·reṣ)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 776: Earth, landof Canaan.כְּנָֽעַן׃ (kə·nā·‘an)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3667: Canaan -- a son of Ham, also his descendants and their land West of the JordanJump to PreviousAholibamah Bare Birth Bore Born Canaan Esau Jaalam Jalam Jeush Je'ush Korah Mother Oholibamah Oholiba'mah
