Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(24) Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor.--Rebekah mentions her father's mother to show that she was descended from a highborn wife; but the servant would welcome it as proving that not only on the father's side, but also on the mother's, she was Isaac's cousin, Milcah being the daughter of Haran, Abraham's brother. And when thus he knew that she fulfilled all the conditions, he gave her the jewels which he was holding in his hand, and bowed the head, and gave thanks.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewShe replied,וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (wat·tō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“Iאָנֹ֑כִי (’ā·nō·ḵî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 595: Iam the daughterבַּת־ (baṯ-)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 1323: A daughterof Bethuel,בְּתוּאֵ֖ל (bə·ṯū·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1328: Bethuel -- perhaps 'man of God', a nephew of Abrahamthe sonבֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonthat Milcahמִלְכָּ֕ה (mil·kāh)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 4435: Milcah -- two Israelite womenboreיָלְדָ֖ה (yā·lə·ḏāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 3205: To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineageto Nahor.”לְנָחֽוֹר׃ (lə·nā·ḥō·wr)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 5152: NochorJump to PreviousBare Bethuel Bethu'el Bore Borne Daughter Milcah Nahor Nahor's Wife
