Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(5) The way toward the north.--This shows that Ezekiel in his vision was within the court of the priests, as otherwise he could not have looked toward the north to see the idol in the north gate. He had already seen this; but now his attention is directed to it particularly. It was not enough that he should see it; it was to be especially pointed out as a part of the reason for the Divine judgments. The expression, "Gate of the altar," may find an additional explanation in the fact mentioned in 2Kings 16:14, that Ahaz removed the altar towards the north, and thus would have placed it very near this gate.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“Sonבֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof man,”אָדָ֕ם (’ā·ḏām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 120: Ruddy, a human beingHe saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayto me,אֵלַ֔י (’ê·lay)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's 413: Near, with, among, to“nowנָ֥א (nā)InterjectionStrong's 4994: I pray', 'now', 'then'lift upשָׂא־ (śā-)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine singularStrong's 5375: To lift, carry, takeyour eyesעֵינֶ֖יךָ (‘ê·ne·ḵā)Noun - cdc | second person masculine singularStrong's 5869: An eye, a fountaintoדֶּ֣רֶךְ (de·reḵ)Noun - common singularStrong's 1870: A road, a course of life, mode of actionthe north.”צָפ֑וֹנָה (ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh)Noun - feminine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 6828: Hidden, dark, the north as a, quarterSo I lifted upוָאֶשָּׂ֤א (wā·’eś·śā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 5375: To lift, carry, takemy eyesעֵינַי֙ (‘ê·nay)Noun - cdc | first person common singularStrong's 5869: An eye, a fountaintoדֶּ֣רֶךְ (de·reḵ)Noun - common singularStrong's 1870: A road, a course of life, mode of actionthe north,צָפ֔וֹנָה (ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh)Noun - feminine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 6828: Hidden, dark, the north as a, quarterand in the entranceבַּבִּאָֽה׃ (bab·bi·’āh)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 872: An entrance to a, buildingnorthמִצָּפוֹן֙ (miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn)Preposition-m | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 6828: Hidden, dark, the north as a, quarterof the gateלְשַׁ֣עַר (lə·ša·‘ar)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 8179: An opening, door, gateof the altarהַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ (ham·miz·bê·aḥ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarI sawוְהִנֵּ֤ה (wə·hin·nêh)Conjunctive waw | InterjectionStrong's 2009: Lo! behold!thisהַזֶּ֖ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatidolסֵ֛מֶל (sê·mel)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5566: An image, statueof jealousy.הַקִּנְאָ֥ה (haq·qin·’āh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 7068: Ardor, zeal, jealousyJump to PreviousAltar Direction Entrance Entry Eyes Gate Idol Image Jealousy Lift North Northward Raise Raised Way
