Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(22) By lot.--See Note on Ezekiel 45:1.To the strangers.--An entirely new feature is here added to the Mosaic law. According to Leviticus 19:34, strangers were to be treated with kindness, but the entire territory was to be divided among the Israelites, and strangers could therefore acquire no land except in so far as they might purchase a temporary right between the years of Jubilee. Now, however, such of them as "shall beget children among you," thus showing a disposition to permanent residence, are to receive an inheritance along with the tribes and in the portion of that tribe where they may have chosen to fix their residence. This privilege is absolute, without any condition of receiving circumcision.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewYou shall allotתַּפִּ֣לוּ (tap·pi·lū)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 5307: To fall, lieitאוֹתָהּ֮ (’ō·w·ṯāh)Direct object marker | third person feminine singularStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseas an inheritanceבְּנַחֲלָה֒ (bə·na·ḥă·lāh)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5159: Something inherited, occupancy, an heirloom, an estate, patrimony, portionfor yourselvesלָכֶ֗ם (lā·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's Hebrew and for the foreignersוּלְהַגֵּרִים֙ (ū·lə·hag·gê·rîm)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1616: A guest, a foreignerwho dwellהַגָּרִ֣ים (hag·gā·rîm)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 1481: To turn aside from the road, sojourn, to shrink, fear, to gather for, hostilityamong youבְּתוֹכְכֶ֔ם (bə·ṯō·wḵ·ḵem)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 8432: A bisection, the centreand whoאֲשֶׁר־ (’ă·šer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thathaveהוֹלִ֥דוּ (hō·w·li·ḏū)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 3205: To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineagechildren.בָנִ֖ים (ḇā·nîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1121: A sonYou are to treat themוְהָיָ֗ה (wə·hā·yāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beas native-bornכְּאֶזְרָח֙ (kə·’ez·rāḥ)Preposition-k | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 249: A spontaneous growth, nativeIsraelites;בִּבְנֵ֣י (biḇ·nê)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonalong with you,אִתְּכֶם֙ (’it·tə·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's 854: Nearness, near, with, by, at, amongthey shall be allottedיִפְּל֣וּ (yip·pə·lū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5307: To fall, liean inheritanceבְנַחֲלָ֔ה (ḇə·na·ḥă·lāh)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5159: Something inherited, occupancy, an heirloom, an estate, patrimony, portionamongבְּת֖וֹךְ (bə·ṯō·wḵ)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 8432: A bisection, the centrethe tribesשִׁבְטֵ֥י (šiḇ·ṭê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 7626: Rod, staff, club, scepter, tribeof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descJump to PreviousAliens Allot Allotted Beget Begotten Born Children Consider Country Decision Distribution Divide Forth Heritage Inheritance Israel Israelites Lot Midst Native-Born Reside Settled Sojourn Strangers Tribes Yourselves
