Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) Will multiply upon you.--The promises of abundant blessing of this, with the previous and following verses, certainly received a partial fulfilment at the time following the return from the exile, and in the subsequent Maccabean period; yet one cannot but feel that the language of promise, if taken only in a literal sense, goes far beyond the historic fulfilment, and hence that these earthly blessings are the shadow and type by which is set forth the higher spiritual blessing given to the Church without stint.Settle you after your old estates.--This does not mean that particular families are to have again each their own former inheritance--though, doubtless, this was true, as far as circumstances allowed, of the comparatively small number of families who returned--but that they shall in general be settled and prosperous, as of old. And even this promise is eclipsed by the next clause: "I will do better unto you than at your beginnings," which can only be considered as fulfilled in the spiritual blessings, far higher and better than anything of earth, of the Messianic kingdom.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewI will fillוְהִרְבֵּיתִ֧י (wə·hir·bê·ṯî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 7235: To be or become much, many or greatyou with peopleאָדָ֥ם (’ā·ḏām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 120: Ruddy, a human beingand animals,וּבְהֵמָ֖ה (ū·ḇə·hê·māh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 929: A dumb beast, any large quadruped, animaland they will increaseוְרָב֣וּ (wə·rā·ḇū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 7235: To be or become much, many or greatand be fruitful.וּפָר֑וּ (ū·p̄ā·rū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 6509: To bear fruit, be fruitfulI will make you inhabitedוְהוֹשַׁבְתִּ֨י (wə·hō·wō·šaḇ·tî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryas you once were,כְּקַדְמֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם (kə·qaḏ·mō·w·ṯê·ḵem)Preposition-k | Noun - feminine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 6927: Antiquity, former stateand I will make you prosperוְהֵטִֽבֹתִי֙ (wə·hê·ṭi·ḇō·ṯî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 2895: To be pleasing or goodmore than before.מֵרִאשֹׁ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (mê·ri·šō·ṯê·ḵem)Preposition-m | Noun - feminine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 7221: Beginning time, early timeThen you will knowוִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם (wî·ḏa‘·tem)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 3045: To knowthatכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionIאֲנִ֥י (’ă·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iam the LORD.יְהוָֽה׃ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelJump to PreviousAnimal Beast Beginnings Better Cause Estate Estates Fertile First Former Formerly Forth Fruit Fruitful Good Increase Increased Inhabited Multiply Offspring Past Prosper Settle States Times Treat
