Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(28) Most desolate.--When the people of the northern kingdom had been carried into captivity, the land had been re-populated by colonies brought from various quarters by the king of Assyria, for the ten tribes were not to return; but now the land of Judah was to be left utterly desolate and uninhabited, that it might yet be re-occupied by the returning exiles. The complete dispersion of the people, not to be effected even by war and conquest, was finally accomplished by the flight of the remnant into Egypt (Jeremiah 43:5-7), in consequence of their fears.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewI will makeוְנָתַתִּ֤י (wə·nā·ṯat·tî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setthe landהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landa desolateשְׁמָמָ֣ה (šə·mā·māh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8077: Devastation, astonishmentwaste,וּמְשַׁמָּ֔ה (ū·mə·šam·māh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4923: Devastation, waste, horrorand the prideגְּא֣וֹן (gə·’ō·wn)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1347: Arrogance, majesty, ornamentof her strengthעֻזָּ֑הּ (‘uz·zāh)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 5797: Strength, mightwill come to an end.וְנִשְׁבַּ֖ת (wə·niš·baṯ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7673: To repose, desist from exertionThe mountainsהָרֵ֥י (hā·rê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 2022: Mountain, hill, hill countryof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descwill become desolate,וְשָֽׁמְמ֛וּ (wə·šā·mə·mū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 8074: To stun, devastate, stupefyso that no oneמֵאֵ֥ין (mê·’ên)Preposition-m | AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particlewill pass through.עוֹבֵֽר׃ (‘ō·w·ḇêr)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 5674: To pass over, through, or by, pass onJump to PreviousAstonishment Cause Cease Ceased Desolate Desolated Desolation End Excellency Israel Lay Mountains Passing Pomp Power Pride Proud Strength Waste
