Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(9) Thou shalt be a man.--The future, added to the text by the words in italics, should be omitted. The original form is exactly the same as in Ezekiel 28:2, and should be so translated. In both cases the article is better omitted. The contrast between the weakness of man and the power of God is strongly brought out: "yet thou art man, in the hand of him that slayeth thee."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewWill you still say,הֶאָמֹ֤ר (he·’ā·mōr)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 559: To utter, say“Iאָ֔נִי (’ā·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iam a god,”אֱלֹהִ֣ים (’ĕ·lō·hîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativein the presenceלִפְנֵ֖י (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The faceof those who slay you?הֹֽרְגֶ֑ךָ (hō·rə·ḡe·ḵā)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 2026: To smite with deadly intentYouוְאַתָּ֥ה (wə·’at·tāh)Conjunctive waw | Pronoun - second person masculine singularStrong's 859: Thou and thee, ye and youwill be only a man,אָדָ֛ם (’ā·ḏām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 120: Ruddy, a human beingnotוְלֹא־ (wə·lō-)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noa god,אֵ֖ל (’êl)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 410: Strength -- as adjective, mighty, the Almightyin the handsבְּיַ֥ד (bə·yaḏ)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 3027: A handof those who wound you.מְחַלְלֶֽיךָ׃ (mə·ḥal·le·ḵā)Verb - Piel - Participle - masculine plural construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 2490: To bore, to wound, to dissolve, to profane, to break, to begin, to playJump to PreviousDefile Face Hand Hands Kill Kills Life Pierceth Piercing Presence Really Slay Slayer Slayeth Slaying Wilt Wound Woundeth Wounds
