Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(13) From Teman; and they of Dedan.--Teman (a word meaning south) was a southern district of Edom (Jeremiah 49:20-21; Habakkuk 3:3), famed for its wisdom (Jeremiah 49:7; Obadiah 1:8-9). Dedan is frequently mentioned by the prophets, but in such a way that it has not been certainly identified. A better translation would be, From Teman unto Dedan, meaning from one end of the country to the other, they shall fall by the sword.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewthereforeלָכֵ֗ן (lā·ḵên)AdverbStrong's 3651: So -- thusthis is whatכֹּ֤ה (kōh)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe Lordאֲדֹנָ֣י (’ă·ḏō·nāy)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 136: The LordGODיְהוִ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHsays:אָמַר֙ (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayI will stretch outוְנָטִ֤תִי (wə·nā·ṭi·ṯî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 5186: To stretch out, spread out, extend, incline, bendMy handיָדִי֙ (yā·ḏî)Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 3027: A handagainstעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstEdomאֱד֔וֹם (’ĕ·ḏō·wm)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 123: The name of a condimentand cut offוְהִכְרַתִּ֥י (wə·hiḵ·rat·tî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 3772: To cut, to destroy, consume, to covenantfrom itמִמֶּ֖נָּה (mim·men·nāh)Preposition | third person feminine singularStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofboth manאָדָ֣ם (’ā·ḏām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 120: Ruddy, a human beingand beast.וּבְהֵמָ֑ה (ū·ḇə·hê·māh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 929: A dumb beast, any large quadruped, animalI will makeוּנְתַתִּ֤יהָ (ū·nə·ṯat·tî·hā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setit a wasteland,חָרְבָּה֙ (ḥā·rə·bāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2723: Waste, desolation, ruinand from Temanמִתֵּימָ֔ן (mit·tê·mān)Preposition-m | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 8487: Teman -- a northern district of Edom, also an Edomite chiefto Dedanוּדְדָ֖נֶה (ū·ḏə·ḏā·neh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - feminine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 1719: Dedan -- a descendant of Ham, also a descendant of Abrahamthey will fallיִפֹּֽלוּ׃ (yip·pō·lū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5307: To fall, lieby the sword.בַּחֶ֥רֶב (ba·ḥe·reḇ)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2719: Drought, a cutting instrument, as a, knife, swordJump to PreviousAnimal Beast Cut Dedan Desolate Edom Fall Hand Lay Stretch Sword Teman
