Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(18) They shall take away.--Chastened and purified by their chastisement, they should return to the land to do away utterly with the abominations which had caused their exile. Historically, this was fully realised in the abomination in which idolatry, the great sin of the people, was ever after held among the Jews. The change of person from you to they, though so common as not necessarily to call for remark, may yet here possibly indicate that what is foretold was to belong rather to their children than to themselves.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew‘When they returnוּבָ֖אוּ־ (ū·ḇā·’ū-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goto it,שָׁ֑מָּה (šām·māh)Adverb | third person feminine singularStrong's 8033: There, then, thitherthey will removeוְהֵסִ֜ירוּ (wə·hê·sî·rū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 5493: To turn asidefrom itמִמֶּֽנָּה׃ (mim·men·nāh)Preposition | third person feminine singularStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyits detestable thingsשִׁקּוּצֶ֛יהָ (šiq·qū·ṣe·hā)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 8251: Disgusting, filthy, idolatrous, an idolandוְאֶת־ (wə·’eṯ-)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyits abominations.תּוֹעֲבוֹתֶ֖יהָ (tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·w·ṯe·hā)Noun - feminine plural construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 8441: Something disgusting, an abhorrence, idolatry, an idolJump to PreviousAbominations Detestable Disgusting Hated Idols Images Remove Thence Thereof Thither Turned Vile
