Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) Moses sprinkled it up toward heaven.--Presenting it, as it were, to God, in evidence of His people's wrongs.A boil breaking forth with blains.--Heb., an inflammation, producing pustules. Diseases of this character are not uncommon in Egypt (comp. Deuteronomy 28:27), but they are not often very severe; nor do they attack indifferently man and beast. The miraculous character of the plague was shown (1) by its being announced beforehand; (2) by its severity (Exodus 9:11); (3) by its universality (Exodus 9:11); and (4) by its extension to animals.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSo they tookוַיִּקְח֞וּ (way·yiq·ḥū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 3947: To takesootפִּ֣יחַ (pî·aḥ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 6368: A powder, ashes, dustfrom the furnaceהַכִּבְשָׁ֗ן (hak·kiḇ·šān)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3536: A smelting furnaceand stoodוַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ (way·ya·‘am·ḏū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5975: To stand, in various relationsbeforeלִפְנֵ֣י (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The facePharaoh.פַרְעֹ֔ה (p̄ar·‘ōh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6547: Pharaoh -- a title of Egypt kingsMosesמֹשֶׁ֖ה (mō·šeh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4872: Moses -- a great Israelite leader, prophet and lawgivertossedוַיִּזְרֹ֥ק (way·yiz·rōq)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2236: Be here and there, scatter, sprinkle, strew itאֹת֛וֹ (’ō·ṯōw)Direct object marker | third person masculine singularStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseinto the air,הַשָּׁמָ֑יְמָה (haš·šā·mā·yə·māh)Article | Noun - masculine plural | third person feminine singularStrong's 8064: Heaven, skyandוַיְהִ֗י (way·hî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, befesteringאֲבַעְבֻּעֹ֔ת (’ă·ḇa‘·bu·‘ōṯ)Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 76: An inflammatory pustuleboilsשְׁחִין֙ (šə·ḥîn)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7822: Inflammation, an ulcerbroke outפֹּרֵ֕חַ (pō·rê·aḥ)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 6524: To break forth as a, bud, bloom, to spread, to fly, to flourishon manבָּאָדָ֖ם (bā·’ā·ḏām)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 120: Ruddy, a human beingand beast.וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה׃ (ū·ḇab·bə·hê·māh)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 929: A dumb beast, any large quadruped, animalJump to PreviousAir Animal Ashes Beast Blains Boil Boils Breaking Broke Cattle Dust Festering Fire Forth Furnace Heaven Heavens Heavenward Kiln Moses Pharaoh Placing Skin-Disease Sky Soot Sprinkled Sprinkleth Stand Stood Themselves Threw Tossed Towards
