Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(23) To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord.--Heb., to morrow is a rest of a holy Sabbath to Jehovah. If the translation of the Authorised Version were correct, the previous institution of the Sabbath, and the knowledge, if not the observance, of it by the Israelites would be necessarily implied, since no otherwise would the double use of the article be intelligible. But in the Hebrew there is no article either here or in Exodus 16:25. The absence of the article indicates that it is a new thing which is announced--if not absolutely, at any rate to those to whom the announcement is made. Much, no doubt, may be said in favour of a primaeval institution of the Sabbath (see the comment on Genesis 2:2-3); and its observance in a certain sense by the Babylonians (see the first Note on Exodus 16:5) is in favour of its having been known to the family of Abraham; but during the Egyptian oppression the continued observance would have been impossible, and the surprise of the elders, as well as the words of Moses, show that at this time the idea was, to the Israelites, practically a novelty.Bake . . . Seethe.--These directions imply a very different substance from any of the natural forms of manna. The heavenly "gift" could be either made into a paste and baked, or converted into a porridge.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewHe told them,וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“Thisה֚וּא (hū)Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, areis whatאֲשֶׁ֣ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatthe LORDיְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelhas said:דִּבֶּ֣ר (dib·ber)Verb - Piel - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1696: To arrange, to speak, to subdue‘Tomorrowמָחָ֑ר (mā·ḥār)AdverbStrong's 4279: Deferred, the morrow, tomorrow, hereafteris a day of solemn rest,שַׁבָּת֧וֹן (šab·bā·ṯō·wn)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7677: Sabbath observance, sabbatisma holyקֹ֛דֶשׁ (qō·ḏeš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6944: A sacred place, thing, sanctitySabbathשַׁבַּת־ (šab·baṯ-)Noun - common singular constructStrong's 7676: Intermission, the Sabbathto the LORD.לַֽיהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelSoאֵ֣ת (’êṯ)Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casebakeתֹּאפ֞וּ (tō·p̄ū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 644: To cook, to bakewhatאֲשֶׁר־ (’ă·šer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatyou want to bake,אֵפ֗וּ (’ê·p̄ū)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 644: To cook, to bakeandוְאֵ֤ת (wə·’êṯ)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseboilתְּבַשְּׁלוּ֙ (tə·ḇaš·šə·lū)Verb - Piel - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 1310: To boil up, cooking, to ripenwhatאֲשֶֽׁר־ (’ă·šer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatyou want to boil.בַּשֵּׁ֔לוּ (baš·šê·lū)Verb - Piel - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 1310: To boil up, cooking, to ripenThen set asideהַנִּ֧יחוּ (han·nî·ḥū)Verb - Hifil - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 3240: Bestow, cast down, lay down, up, leave off, let alone remain, pacify, place, whateverכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyremainsהָ֣עֹדֵ֔ף (hā·‘ō·ḏêp̄)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 5736: To remain over, be in excessand keep itלְמִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת (lə·miš·me·reṯ)Preposition-l | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4931: A guard, watch, charge, functionuntilעַד־ (‘aḏ-)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilemorning.??הַבֹּֽקֶר׃ (hab·bō·qer)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1242: Dawn, morningJump to PreviousBake Boil Holy Kept Lay Meant Morning Morrow Observance Rest Sabbath Seethe Solemn Tomorrow To-Morrow Want Yourselves
