Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(18) And that thou mayest go in and possess.--This should be taken with what follows, "Possess," so as "to cast out all thine enemies from before thee" (Deuteronomy 6:19). There was no question now whether Israel should pass the Jordan; but how far the conquest of Canaan would be completed, or within what period of time, depended upon their faithfulness to His decrees. That it was delayed by their disobedience is clear from Judges 2:20-23.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewDoוְעָשִׂ֛יתָ (wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 6213: To do, makewhat is rightהַיָּשָׁ֥ר (hay·yā·šār)Article | Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 3477: Straight, rightand goodוְהַטּ֖וֹב (wə·haṭ·ṭō·wḇ)Conjunctive waw, Article | Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2896: Pleasant, agreeable, goodin the sightבְּעֵינֵ֣י (bə·‘ê·nê)Preposition-b | Noun - cdcStrong's 5869: An eye, a fountainof the LORD,יְהוָ֑ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelso thatלְמַ֙עַן֙ (lə·ma·‘an)ConjunctionStrong's 4616: Purpose -- intentit may be wellיִ֣יטַב (yî·ṭaḇ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3190: To be good, well, glad, or pleasingwith youלָ֔ךְ (lāḵ)Preposition | second person masculine singularStrong's Hebrew and that you may enterוּבָ֗אתָ (ū·ḇā·ṯā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goand possessוְיָֽרַשְׁתָּ֙ (wə·yā·raš·tā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 3423: To occupy, to seize, to rob, to inherit, to expel, to impoverish, to ruinthe goodהַטֹּבָ֔ה (haṭ·ṭō·ḇāh)Article | Adjective - feminine singularStrong's 2896: Pleasant, agreeable, goodlandהָאָ֣רֶץ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landwhich the LORDיְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelyour God sworeנִשְׁבַּ֥ע (niš·ba‘)Verb - Nifal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7650: To seven oneself, swearto give your fathers,לַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (la·’ă·ḇō·ṯe·ḵā)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 1: FatherJump to PreviousEnter Eyes Heritage Lord's Mayest Oath Possess Possessed Possession Promised Right Sight Sware Swore Sworn Upright
