Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(21) His field.--These words are not found in Exodus 20. The children of Israel had now become, or were just about to become, landowners; hence the addition is appropriate in this place. There is also another slight verbal alteration. One word only is used for "covet" in Exodus 20:17; here two are employed. The idea of the one is to "delight in," and the other to "lust after."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewYou shall notוְלֹ֥א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nocovetתַחְמֹ֖ד (ṯaḥ·mōḏ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 2530: To desire, take pleasure inyour neighbor’sרֵעֶ֑ךָ (rê·‘e·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 7453: Friend, companion, fellowwife.אֵ֣שֶׁת (’ê·šeṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 802: Woman, wife, femaleYou shall not covetתִתְאַוֶּ֜ה (ṯiṯ·’aw·weh)Verb - Hitpael - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 183: To incline, desireyour neighbor’sרֵעֶ֗ךָ (rê·‘e·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 7453: Friend, companion, fellowhouseבֵּ֣ית (bêṯ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1004: A houseor field,שָׂדֵ֜הוּ (śā·ḏê·hū)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 7704: Field, landor his manservantוְעַבְדּ֤וֹ (wə·‘aḇ·dōw)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 5650: Slave, servantor maidservant,וַאֲמָתוֹ֙ (wa·’ă·mā·ṯōw)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 519: A maidservant, female slaveor his oxשׁוֹר֣וֹ (šō·w·rōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 7794: A head of cattle (bullock, ox, etcetera)or donkey,וַחֲמֹר֔וֹ (wa·ḥă·mō·rōw)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2543: A male assor anythingוְכֹ֖ל (wə·ḵōl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythatאֲשֶׁ֥ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatbelongs to your neighbor.”לְרֵעֶֽךָ׃ (lə·rê·‘e·ḵā)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 7453: Friend, companion, fellowJump to PreviousAss Belongs Bondman Covet Desire Donkey Handmaid House Maidservant Maid-Servant Male Manservant Man-Servant Neighbor Neighbor's Neighbour's Ox Servant Wife
