Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(26) Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them.--"Here he sums up the whole Law, all of it, and they took it upon them with a curse and an oath" (Rashi). From this verse St. Paul also reasons that "as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse." For no man can do all of them. And therefore it is impossible to secure the blessing of Gerizim except through Him who bare the curse of Ebal. "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us, as it is written, cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree." In all these curses the verb is wanting. "Cursed is he," would be a more correct translation in modern English. These curses are not imprecations so much as declarations of fact.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew‘Cursed isאָר֗וּר (’ā·rūr)Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singularStrong's 779: To execratehe whoאֲשֶׁ֧ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatdoes notלֹא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noputיָקִ֛ים (yā·qîm)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6965: To arise, stand up, standthe wordsדִּבְרֵ֥י (diḇ·rê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causeof thisהַזֹּ֖את (haz·zōṯ)Article | Pronoun - feminine singularStrong's 2063: Hereby in it, likewise, the one other, same, she, so much, such deed, that, lawהַתּוֹרָֽה־ (hat·tō·w·rāh-)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8451: Direction, instruction, lawinto practice.’לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (la·‘ă·śō·wṯ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 6213: To do, makeAnd {let} allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe peopleהָעָ֖ם (hā·‘ām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flocksay,וְאָמַ֥ר (wə·’ā·mar)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say‘Amen!’”אָמֵֽן׃ (’ā·mên)AdverbStrong's 543: Sure, faithfulness, trulyJump to PreviousAmen Carrying Confirm Confirmeth Cursed Establish Heart Law Uphold Words
