Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(22) This gives us to understand that Nebuchadnezzar had arrived at the zenith of his power. The extent of his dominions may be estimated with tolerable accuracy as follows:--Northwards he possessed Armenia, and a considerable portion of Asia Minor; in the west, Syria, and at one time Egypt; southwards, his power reached the Persian Gulf; while in the east, the Medes and Elamites were subject to him. Possessing, as he did, the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf, all the treasures of the known world were at his command. In his first vision he was represented as the golden head of the image. In his pride he desired the whole image to be of gold, and himself to be the image--but this was the sin for which he was to suffer.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewyou,אַנְתְּ־ (’ant-)Pronoun - second person masculine singularStrong's 607: You O king,מַלְכָּ֔א (mal·kā)Noun - masculine singular determinateStrong's 4430: A kingare [that tree]!ה֣וּא (hū)Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 607: You For you have become greatרְבַ֖ית (rə·ḇayṯ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 7236: To grow greatand strong;וּתְקֵ֑פְתְּ (ū·ṯə·qê·p̄ət)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 8631: To become, mighty, obstinateyour greatnessוּרְבוּתָ֤ךְ (ū·rə·ḇū·ṯāḵ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 7238: Greatnesshas grownרְבָת֙ (rə·ḇāṯ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 7236: To grow greatto reachוּמְטָ֣ת (ū·mə·ṭāṯ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 4291: To arrive, extend, happenthe sky,לִשְׁמַיָּ֔א (liš·may·yā)Preposition-l | Noun - mddStrong's 8065: The skyand your dominionוְשָׁלְטָנָ֖ךְ (wə·šā·lə·ṭā·nāḵ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 7985: Dominionextends to the endsלְס֥וֹף (lə·sō·wp̄)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5491: A terminationof the earth.אַרְעָֽא׃ (’ar·‘ā)Noun - feminine singular determinateStrong's 772: The earth, lowJump to PreviousDistant Dominion Earth End Ends Extends Great Greatness Grown Heaven Heavens Increased Majesty Mighty Parts Power Reached Reaches Reacheth Sky Stretching Strong Tree
