Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(29) Then he called for a light.--More accurately, 'for lights. As St. Luke does not use, as in Acts 20:8, the word for "lamps," it is probable that the lights were torches, and that the gaoler, with one in his hand, leapt into the darkness of the subterranean dungeon.
