Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) Trespassed.--Dealt unfaithfully.Turned away their faces from the habitation of the Lord.--Comp. Jeremiah 2:27 : "They have turned their backs unto me, and not their faces." (Comp. also Ezekiel 8:16.)Turned their backs.--Literally, gave neck (nathan '?reph); a phrase here used as equivalent to turned neck (p?n?h '?reph), Jeremiah 2:27, et al. The ordinary meaning is "to put to flight," as in Psalm 18:41. It is clear from the next verse that the description is meant to apply to Ahaz and his generation.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewForכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionour fathersאֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ (’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū)Noun - masculine plural construct | first person common pluralStrong's 1: Fatherwere unfaithfulמָעֲל֣וּ (mā·‘ă·lū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 4603: To cover up, to act covertly, treacherouslyand didוְעָשׂ֥וּ (wə·‘ā·śū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 6213: To do, makeevilהָרַ֛ע (hā·ra‘)Article | Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 7451: Bad, evilin the sightבְּעֵינֵ֥י (bə·‘ê·nê)Preposition-b | Noun - cdcStrong's 5869: An eye, a fountainof the LORDיְהוָֽה־ (Yah·weh-)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelour God.אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (’ĕ·lō·hê·nū)Noun - masculine plural construct | first person common pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeThey abandoned Him,וַיַּֽעַזְבֻ֑הוּ (way·ya·‘az·ḇu·hū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine plural | third person masculine singularStrong's 5800: To loosen, relinquish, permitturned their facesפְנֵיהֶ֛ם (p̄ə·nê·hem)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 6440: The faceawayוַיַּסֵּ֧בּוּ (way·yas·sêb·bū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5437: To turn about, go around, surroundfrom the dwelling placeמִמִּשְׁכַּ֥ן (mim·miš·kan)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4908: A residence, the Tabernacleof the LORD,יְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israeland turnedוַיִּתְּנוּ־ (way·yit·tə·nū-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5414: To give, put, settheir backs on Him.עֹֽרֶף׃ (‘ō·rep̄)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6203: The nape, back of the neck, the backJump to PreviousActed Backs Dwelling Evil Eyes Faces Fathers Forsake Forsaken Forsook Habitation House Lord's Neck Round Sight Sinning Tabernacle Transgressed Treacherously Trespassed Turn Turned Unfaithful
