Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) Ziklag.--In the days of Joshua this place fell to the lot of Simeon (Joshua 19:5). It was afterwards captured by the Philistines, not long before the time of David, and Keil thinks was left without inhabitants in consequence of this conquest. Its exact situation has never been clearly ascertained; it certainly lay far south, near the Amalekite borders.Wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.--These words supply us with a double note of time in the question of the date of this First Book of Samuel. They tell us that it was cast in its present shape after the revolt of Jeroboam, and certainly before the days of the carrying away of Israel to Babylon.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThatהַה֖וּא (ha·hū)Article | Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, aredayבַּיּ֥וֹם (bay·yō·wm)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3117: A dayAchishאָכִ֛ישׁ (’ā·ḵîš)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 397: Achish -- king of Gathgaveוַיִּתֶּן־ (way·yit·ten-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, sethimל֥וֹ (lōw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's Hebrew Ziklag,צִֽקְלָ֑ג (ṣiq·lāḡ)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 6860: Ziklag -- a city assigned to Judah, also to Simeonandלָכֵ֞ן (lā·ḵên)AdverbStrong's 3651: So -- thustoעַ֖ד (‘aḏ)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilethisהַזֶּֽה׃ (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatdayהַיּ֥וֹם (hay·yō·wm)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3117: A day[it]צִֽקְלַג֙ (ṣiq·laḡ)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 6860: Ziklag -- a city assigned to Judah, also to Simeonstill belongs toהָיְתָ֤ה (hā·yə·ṯāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, bethe kingsלְמַלְכֵ֣י (lə·mal·ḵê)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 4428: A kingof Judah.יְהוּדָ֔ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four IsraelitesJump to PreviousAchish A'chish Belonged Belongeth Belongs Judah Kings Pertaineth Pertains Property Reason Straight Wherefore Ziklag
