Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(27) The Philistines have invaded the land.--This, as Lange well observes, was "God's plan to save David." The Philistines had probably availed themselves of the opportunity which Saul's withdrawal of his forces southward to surround the armed band of David had given them, and were invading in force the more northern provinces.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThen a messengerוּמַלְאָ֣ךְ (ū·mal·’āḵ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4397: A messenger, of God, an angelcameבָּ֔א (bā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, gotoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toSaul,שָׁא֖וּל (šā·’ūl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7586: Saul -- first king of Israel, also an Edomite and two Israelitessaying,לֵאמֹ֑ר (lê·mōr)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 559: To utter, say“Comeוְלֵ֔כָה (wə·lê·ḵāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 1980: To go, come, walkquickly,מַהֲרָ֣ה (ma·hă·rāh)Verb - Piel - Imperative - masculine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 4116: To be liquid, flow easily, to hurry, promptlyforכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthe Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (p̄ə·liš·tîm)Noun - proper - masculine pluralStrong's 6430: Philistines -- inhabitants of Philistiahave raidedפָשְׁט֥וּ (p̄ā·šə·ṭū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 6584: To strip off, make a dash, raidthe land!”הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landJump to PreviousHaste Hurry Invaded Messenger Philistines Pushed Quick Quickly Raid Raiding Saul
