Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(7) As in times past.--The old life went on as before, and David seemingly was received on terms of intimacy and affection by the king, but a new cause was soon supplied which again lit up the slumbering fires of jealousy in the king's heart. The next verse tells us of a successful campaign against the hereditary foes of Israel, in which, as usual, David was the hero.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSo Jonathanיְהוֹנָתָן֙ (yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3083: Jonathan -- 'the LORD has given', the name of a number of Israelitessummonedוַיִּקְרָ֤א (way·yiq·rā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7121: To call, proclaim, readDavidלְדָוִ֔ד (lə·ḏā·wiḏ)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jesseand toldוַיַּגֶּד־ (way·yag·geḏ-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5046: To be conspicuoushimלוֹ֙ (lōw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's Hebrew allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everytheseהָאֵ֑לֶּה (hā·’êl·leh)Article | Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, thosethings.הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (had·də·ḇā·rîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causeThen Jonathanיְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן (yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3083: Jonathan -- 'the LORD has given', the name of a number of Israelitesbroughtוַיָּבֵ֨א (way·yā·ḇê)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goDavidדָּוִד֙ (dā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jessetoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toSaulשָׁא֔וּל (šā·’ūl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7586: Saul -- first king of Israel, also an Edomite and two Israelitesto serveוַיְהִ֥י (way·hî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, behimלְפָנָ֖יו (lə·p̄ā·nāw)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6440: The faceas he had before.כְּאֶתְמ֥וֹל (kə·’eṯ·mō·wl)Preposition-k | AdverbStrong's 865: Heretofore, definitely yesterdayJump to PreviousBeforetime Conversation David Declared Heretofore Jonathan Kept Past Presence Previously Saul Showed Side Times Whole Word Words
