Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(51) And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.--The Philistines had agreed to consider this single combat as decisive. They had no fears as to its result, and when they saw their boasted champion fall they were seized with a sudden panic. Their adversaries, the children of Israel, on the other hand, seeing the unarmed shepherd boy with the head of the great warrior who had so long defied them in his hand, felt that the old power had come back to them, and that once more their Invisible King was with them, so they at once, with an irresistible shout, charged their dismayed foes, and the battle, as far as the Philistines were concerned, became a total rout.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewDavidדָּ֠וִד (dā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jesseranוַיָּ֣רָץ (way·yā·rāṣ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7323: To runand stoodוַיַּעֲמֹ֨ד (way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5975: To stand, in various relationsover him.אֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toHe grabbedוַיִּקַּ֣ח (way·yiq·qaḥ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3947: To takethe Philistine’sהַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֜י (hap·pə·liš·tî)Article | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6430: Philistines -- inhabitants of Philistiaswordחַ֠רְבּוֹ (ḥar·bōw)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2719: Drought, a cutting instrument, as a, knife, swordand pulled itוַֽיִּשְׁלְפָ֤הּ (way·yiš·lə·p̄āh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 8025: To pull out, up, offfrom its sheath.מִתַּעְרָהּ֙ (mit·ta‘·rāh)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 8593: A knife, razor, a scabbardAnd having killed him,וַיְמֹ֣תְתֵ֔הוּ (way·mō·ṯə·ṯê·hū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 4191: To die, to killhe cut offוַיִּכְרָת־ (way·yiḵ·rāṯ-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3772: To cut, to destroy, consume, to covenanthis headרֹאשׁ֑וֹ (rō·šōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 7218: The headwith [the sword].בָּ֖הּ (bāh)Preposition | third person feminine singularStrong's Hebrew When the Philistinesהַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֛ים (hap·pə·liš·tîm)Article | Noun - proper - masculine pluralStrong's 6430: Philistines -- inhabitants of Philistiasawוַיִּרְא֧וּ (way·yir·’ū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 7200: To seethatכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctiontheir heroגִּבּוֹרָ֖ם (gib·bō·w·rām)Adjective - masculine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 1368: Powerful, warrior, tyrantwas dead,מֵ֥ת (mêṯ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4191: To die, to killthey turned and ran.וַיָּנֻֽסוּ׃ (way·yā·nu·sū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5127: To flit, vanish awayJump to PreviousChampion Cut David Dead Drew Head Hold Killed Mighty Philistine Philistines Philistine's Ran Scabbard Sheath Slew Stood Sword Thereof Therewith
