Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(24, 25) With three bullocks . . . And they slew a bullock.--There at first sight seems a discrepancy here, and the LXX. translators seem to have felt it, for they read, instead of "three bullocks," "a bullock of three years old." The true explanation, however, is that the one bullock alluded to in 1Samuel 1:25 was the burnt offering by which the child was consecrated to the Lord. The other two were the yearly festival offering, the presentation of which being the usual gift, the chronicler did not think it here worth while to mention again.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewOnceכַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (ka·’ă·šer)Preposition-k | Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatshe had weaned him,גְּמָלַ֗תּוּ (gə·mā·lat·tū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 1580: To deal fully or adequately with, deal out to, wean, ripen[Hannah] took [the boy]וַתַּעֲלֵ֨הוּ (wat·ta·‘ă·lê·hū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, activelywith her,עִמָּ֜הּ (‘im·māh)Preposition | third person feminine singularStrong's 5973: With, equally withalong with a three-year-oldשְׁלֹשָׁה֙ (šə·lō·šāh)Number - masculine singularStrong's 7969: Three, third, thricebull,בְּפָרִ֤ים (bə·p̄ā·rîm)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 6499: Young bull, steeran ephahוְאֵיפָ֨ה (wə·’ê·p̄āh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 374: Ephah -- an ephah (a measure of grain)of flour,קֶ֙מַח֙ (qe·maḥ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7058: Flour, mealand a skinוְנֵ֣בֶל (wə·nê·ḇel)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5035: A skin-bag for, liquids, a vase, a lyreof wine.יַ֔יִן (ya·yin)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3196: Wine, intoxicationThough the boyוְהַנַּ֖עַר (wə·han·na·‘ar)Conjunctive waw, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5288: A boy, lad, youth, retainerwas still young,נָֽעַר׃ (nā·‘ar)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5288: A boy, lad, youth, retainershe brought himוַתְּבִאֵ֥הוּ (wat·tə·ḇi·’ê·hū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goto the houseבֵית־ (ḇêṯ-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1004: A houseof the LORDיְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelat Shiloh.שִׁל֑וֹ (ši·lōw)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 7887: Shiloh -- a city in EphraimJump to PreviousAlthough Bottle Boy Bull Bullocks Bulls Causeth Child Ephah House Jug Meal Ox Shiloh Skin Three Weaned Wine Young Youth
