Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) All these the sons of Jediael.--Render, "All these were sons of Jediael; (according) to the heads of the clans, valiant warriors; 17,200 going out in host to the battle." Perhaps the particle (according to) should be omitted. In any case, the chiefs or the clans are regarded as one with their warriors. The sum of the warriors of Benjamin is thus 54,434. The Mosaic census (Numbers 26:41) gave 45,600. An increase of barely 14,000 in the course of atleast three centuries may seem too small. But the tribe was well-nigh exterminated in the vengeance which Israel took for the crime of Gibeah (Judges 20:47).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAllכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everytheseאֵ֜לֶּה (’êl·leh)Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, thosesonsבְּנֵ֤י (bə·nê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Jediaelיְדִֽיעֲאֵל֙ (yə·ḏî·‘ă·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3043: Jediael -- 'knowing God', three Israelites[were] headsלְרָאשֵׁ֣י (lə·rā·šê)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 7218: The headof their families,הָאָב֔וֹת (hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1: Fathermighty warriors;גִּבּוֹרֵ֖י (gib·bō·w·rê)Adjective - masculine plural constructStrong's 1368: Powerful, warrior, tyrantthere were 17,200שִׁבְעָֽה־ (šiḇ·‘āh-)Number - masculine singularStrong's 7651: Seven, seven times, a week, an indefinite numberfitיֹצְאֵ֥י (yō·ṣə·’ê)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 3318: To go, bring, out, direct and proximfor battle.צָבָ֖א (ṣā·ḇā)Noun - common singularStrong's 6635: A mass of persons, reg, organized for, war, a campaignJump to PreviousAble Army Battle Families Fathers Fit Forth Heads Host Households Houses Hundred Jediael Mighty Ready Seventeen Soldiers Thousand Valor Valour War
