Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(66) And the residue of the families.--The Hebrew text can hardly mean this; and Joshua 21:20 shows that it is incorrect. The original text must have been, "And to the families of the sons of Kohath:--and the cities of their border were of the tribe of Ephraim." The construction breaks off, and a new start is made by the words "and the cities," &c. The verse is abridged as compared with Joshua, 50100Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAnd some of the clansוּמִֽמִּשְׁפְּח֖וֹת (ū·mim·miš·pə·ḥō·wṯ)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-m | Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 4940: A family, circle of relatives, a class, a species, sort, a tribe, peopleof the Kohathitesבְּנֵ֣י (bə·nê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonwere given citiesעָרֵ֣י (‘ā·rê)Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 5892: Excitementfrom the tribeמִמַּטֵּ֖ה (mim·maṭ·ṭêh)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4294: A staff, rod, shaft, branch, a tribeof Ephraimאֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (’ep̄·rā·yim)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 669: Ephraim -- a son of Joseph, also his descendants and their territoryfor their territory:גְבוּלָ֔ם (ḡə·ḇū·lām)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 1366: A cord, a boundary, the territory inclosedJump to PreviousBorder Borders Children Cities Clans Coasts Decision Ephraim E'phraim Families Kohath Kohathite Lord's Residue Territory Towns Tribe
