Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(60) "Gibeon and her pastures" is omitted; probably an oversight, due to the similarity of sound and form between Gibeon and Geba. Alemeth and Almon are each valid formations, and perhaps represent an older and younger name of the place.Thirteen cities.--The list in its present shape contains eleven. This proves that Juttah and Gibeon should be restored to the text.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAnd from the tribeוּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה (ū·mim·maṭ·ṭêh)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4294: A staff, rod, shaft, branch, a tribeof Benjaminבִנְיָמִ֗ן (ḇin·yā·min)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1144: Benjamin -- 'son of the right hand', youngest son of Jacob, also the name of two other Israelites[they were given]אֶת־ (’eṯ-)Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseGeba,גֶּ֤בַע (ge·ḇa‘)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 1387: Geba -- a Levitical city of BenjaminAlemeth,עָלֶ֣מֶת (‘ā·le·meṯ)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 5964: Alemeth -- a Benjamite name, also a Levitical city in Benjaminand Anathothעֲנָת֖וֹת (‘ă·nā·ṯō·wṯ)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 6068: Anathoth -- a place near Jerusalem, also two Israeliteseach with their pasturelands.מִגְרָשֶׁ֑יהָ (miḡ·rā·še·hā)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 4054: A suburb, the area around a, building, the margin of the seaSo they had thirteenשְׁלֹשׁ־ (šə·lōš-)Number - feminine singular constructStrong's 7969: Three, third, thricecitiesעָרֵיהֶ֛ם (‘ā·rê·hem)Noun - feminine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5892: Excitementin allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyamong their families.בְּמִשְׁפְּחוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ (bə·miš·pə·ḥō·w·ṯê·hem)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 4940: A family, circle of relatives, a class, a species, sort, a tribe, peopleJump to PreviousAlemeth Al'emeth Anathoth An'athoth Benjamin Cities Clans Distributed Families Geba Gibeon Kohathite Lands Open Outskirts Pasture Pasturelands Suburbs Thirteen Throughout Together Towns Tribe
