Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(3) Are not his servants come . . . for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?--Literally, Is it not for to search . . . that his servants are come unto thee? This is hardly an improvement on Samuel: "Is it not to search the city (Rabbath-Ammon, the capital), and to spy it out, and to overthrow it, that David hath sent his servants unto thee?" The Syriac and Arabic agree with Samuel in reading "city;" LXX. and Vulg., "land."
