Pulpit Commentary

Pulpit CommentaryVerse 16. - And the soldiers led him away within the court, which is the Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. This was the principal court of the palace, where a large number of soldiers were always quartered. "The whole band" would be the "cohors praetoria" of Cicero; Pilate's body-guard.

Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(16) Into the hall, called Praetorium.--The same word is used by St. Matthew (Matthew 27:27), but is there translated the "common hall." See Note there as to the meaning of the word. Here, again, we have a Latin word.
