Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(9) And the sons of Aaron brought the blood.--His sons, for whom the sacrifice was offered as well as for himself, and who assisted at the ritual, after catching the blood in a bowl (see Leviticus 1:5), brought it to Aaron, who stood at the altar waiting to receive it. Unlike the ordinary law of the sin offering for the high priest and for the people, the blood of which was taken into the tabernacle (see Leviticus 4:7; Leviticus 4:16-18), Aaron on this occasion simply put some of it upon the four horns of the brazen altar as Moses had done in the sin offering of consecration (see Leviticus 8:15), for, though high priest, he had not as yet access to the holy place of the sanctuary till he had qualified himself by this sacrifice in the court-yard.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThe sonsבְּנֵ֨י (bə·nê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Aaronאַהֲרֹ֣ן (’a·hă·rōn)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 175: Aaron -- an elder brother of Mosesbroughtוַ֠יַּקְרִבוּ (way·yaq·ri·ḇū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 7126: To come near, approachthe bloodהַדָּם֮ (had·dām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedto him,אֵלָיו֒ (’ê·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toand he dippedוַיִּטְבֹּ֤ל (way·yiṭ·bōl)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2881: To dip, to immersehis fingerאֶצְבָּעוֹ֙ (’eṣ·bā·‘ōw)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 676: Something to sieze with, a finger, a toein the bloodבַּדָּ֔ם (bad·dām)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedand appliedוַיִּתֵּ֖ן (way·yit·tên)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setit toעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe hornsקַרְנ֣וֹת (qar·nō·wṯ)Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 7161: A horn, a flask, cornet, an elephant's tooth, a corner, a peak, a ray, powerof the altar.הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ (ham·miz·bê·aḥ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarAndוְאֶת־ (wə·’eṯ-)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casehe poured outיָצַ֔ק (yā·ṣaq)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3332: To pour out, to melt, cast as metal, to place firmly, to stiffen, grow hardthe rest of the bloodהַדָּ֣ם (had·dām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedatאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe baseיְס֖וֹד (yə·sō·wḏ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3247: Foundation, baseof the altar.הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ (ham·miz·bê·aḥ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4196: An altarJump to PreviousAaron Aaron's Altar Base Blood Bottom Dipped Dippeth Finger Foundation Horns Poured Presented Putteth Rest
