Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(14) Offer a young bullock.--The same sacrifice which is prescribed for the sin of the high priest (comp. Leviticus 4:3), and though not expressed here, it must be without blemish. And bring him before the tabernacle of the congregation.--Better, before the tent of meeting. (See Leviticus 1:3.) This no more means that the whole congregation or the thousands of Israelites are all to lay hold of the victim, and carry it to the appointed place of slaughter, than the phrase in Leviticus 4:12 signifies that the high priest is himself to carry the bullock. It is the regular Hebrew idiom, which denotes that the people are to cause the sacrifice to be carried. We should have deemed it superfluous to explain this well-known mode of expression had it not been that mistaken arguments have been deduced from it.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewwhen they become awareוְנֽוֹדְעָה֙ (wə·nō·wḏ·‘āh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 3045: To knowof the sinהַֽחַטָּ֔את (ha·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderthey have committed,חָטְא֖וּ (ḥā·ṭə·’ū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 2398: To miss, to sin, to forfeit, lack, expiate, repent, lead astray, condemnthen the assemblyהַקָּהָ֜ל (haq·qā·hāl)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6951: Assembly, convocation, congregationmust bringוְהִקְרִ֨יבוּ (wə·hiq·rî·ḇū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 7126: To come near, approacha youngבֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonbullבָּקָר֙ (bā·qār)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1241: Beef cattle, ox, a herdas a sin offeringלְחַטָּ֔את (lə·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ)Preposition-l | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderand presentוְהֵבִ֣יאוּ (wə·hê·ḇî·’ū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goitאֹת֔וֹ (’ō·ṯōw)Direct object marker | third person masculine singularStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casebeforeלִפְנֵ֖י (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The facethe Tentאֹ֥הֶל (’ō·hel)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 168: A tentof Meeting.מוֹעֵֽד׃ (mō·w·‘êḏ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4150: Appointed time, place, or meetingJump to PreviousAssembly Aware Bull Committed Congregation Herd Light Meeting Offer Offering Ox Present Sin Sinned Sin-Offering Tabernacle Tent Wherein Wherewith Young
