Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(15) And if ye shall despise my statutes.--From passive indifference to the Divine statutes mentioned in the preceding verse, their falling away is sure to follow. Hence what was at first mere listlessness now develops itself into a contemptuous education of God's ordinances.Or if your soul abhor my judgments.--Better, and if your soul, &c, as the picture of their Apostasy goes on developing itself. But that ye break my covenant.--Better, that ye break, &c, without the "but," which is not in the original, and obscures the sense of the passage, since it is the fact of their abhorrence of God's law which breaks the Divine covenant with them. (See Genesis 17:14.) The sense is more correctly given by rendering this clause "Thus breaking my covenant," or "Thereby breaking my covenant."Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewand ifוְאִם־ (wə·’im-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notyou rejectתִּמְאָ֔סוּ (tim·’ā·sū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 3988: To spurn, to disappearMy statutes,בְּחֻקֹּתַ֣י (bə·ḥuq·qō·ṯay)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine plural construct | first person common singularStrong's 2708: Something prescribed, an enactment, statutedespiseתִּגְעַ֣ל (tiḡ·‘al)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 1602: To detest, to rejectMy ordinances,מִשְׁפָּטַ֖י (miš·pā·ṭay)Noun - masculine plural construct | first person common singularStrong's 4941: A verdict, a sentence, formal decree, divine law, penalty, justice, privilege, styleand neglectלְבִלְתִּ֤י (lə·ḇil·tî)Preposition-lStrong's 1115: A failure of, not, except, without, unless, besides, because not, untilto carry outעֲשׂוֹת֙ (‘ă·śō·wṯ)Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 6213: To do, makeallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyMy commandments,מִצְוֺתַ֔י (miṣ·wō·ṯay)Noun - feminine plural construct | first person common singularStrong's 4687: Commandmentand so breakלְהַפְרְכֶ֖ם (lə·hap̄·rə·ḵem)Preposition-l | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 6565: To break up, to violate, frustrateMy covenant,בְּרִיתִֽי׃ (bə·rî·ṯî)Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 1285: A covenantJump to PreviousAbhor Abhors Break Breaking Carry Commandments Commands Covenant Decisions Decrees Despise Fail Hate Instead Judgments Kick Laws Orders Ordinances Reject Rules Soul Souls Spurn Statutes Violate
