Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(26) And if the man have none to redeem it.--In case, however, he has either no nearest of kin, or if his nearest of kin is himself too poor to perform this duty, which is incumbent upon him, "and himself be able to redeem it," that is, after he was compelled, by stress of poverty, to sell the property he has become prosperous, so as to be able to redeem it himself; though not distinctly expressed, it is implied that under these altered circumstances he is obliged to redeem his patrimony himself. According to the canonical law, however, he must not borrow money to redeem it.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewOr ifכִּ֛י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctiona manוְאִ֕ישׁ (wə·’îš)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personhasיִֽהְיֶה־ (yih·yeh-)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beno oneלֹ֥א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noto redeem itגֹּאֵ֑ל (gō·’êl)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 1350: To redeem, act as kinsmanfor him,לּ֖וֹ (lōw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's Hebrew but he prospersוְהִשִּׂ֣יגָה (wə·hiś·śî·ḡāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 5381: To reach, overtakeand acquiresוּמָצָ֖א (ū·mā·ṣā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4672: To come forth to, appear, exist, to attain, find, acquire, to occur, meet, be presentenoughכְּדֵ֥י (kə·ḏê)Preposition-k | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1767: Sufficiency, enoughto redeem his land,גְאֻלָּתֽוֹ׃ (ḡə·’ul·lā·ṯōw)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1353: Redemption, relationshipJump to PreviousAble Acquired Acquires Attained Case Enough Find Finds Found Gets Hand However Kinsman Later Means Money Prosperous Prospers Redeem Redeemer Redemption Rich Right Sufficeth Sufficient Waxed Waxen Wealth
