Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(14) Ye shall not oppress one another.--Better, ye shall not overreach any man his brother. Not only does the Law provide against the poor man losing his land for ever, but enjoins that in the temporary sales the buyer and seller are not to take undue advantage of each other's circumstances. Hence it was enacted that if any one bought or sold anything for a sixth part more than its value the aggrieved party was entitled to have the excess returned to him, and if it amounted to more than a sixth part, the contract could be rescinded altogether. The fact that the phrase which is here translated "one another" in the Authorised Version is varied in the Hebrew in Leviticus 25:17, where it is likewise rendered "one another," shows that it is not used in this idiomatic sense, but is designed to denote fellow-brethren, members of the same community, those who are related to each other by race and creed, as in Exodus 32:27, Jeremiah 31:34Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIfוְכִֽי־ (wə·ḵî-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionyou make a saleתִמְכְּר֤וּ (ṯim·kə·rū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 4376: To sellto your neighborלַעֲמִיתֶ֔ךָ (la·‘ă·mî·ṯe·ḵā)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 5997: Companionship, a comrade, kindred manorא֥וֹ (’ōw)ConjunctionStrong's 176: Desire, ifa purchaseקָנֹ֖ה (qā·nōh)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 7069: To erect, create, to procure, by purchase, to ownfromמִיַּ֣ד (mî·yaḏ)Preposition-m | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 3027: A handhim,עֲמִיתֶ֑ךָ (‘ă·mî·ṯe·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 5997: Companionship, a comrade, kindred manyou must notאַל־ (’al-)AdverbStrong's 408: Nottake advantageתּוֹנ֖וּ (tō·w·nū)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 3238: To rage, be violent, to suppress, to maltreatof oneאִ֥ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personanother.אָחִֽיו׃ (’ā·ḥîw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 251: A brother, )Jump to PreviousAdvantage Aught Business Buy Buyest Countrymen Fellow Friend Friend's Goods Hand Money Moreover Neighbor Neighbor's Neighbour Neighbour's Oppress Ought Sale Sell Sellest Trading Wrong
