Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard.--In gathering in the vine care is to be taken only to cut off' the large clusters, but not the infantas, as the expression literally denotes, which is here rendered by "glean." Those branches or twigs which had only one or two grapes on them were to be left to the poor.Neither shalt thou gather every grape.--Better, Nor shalt thou gather the scattered grapes, that is, those single grapes which had either fallen to the ground during the process of cutting off the branches, or those which were scattered about the ground after the vintage was completed. Like the gleanings of the field these grapes were the portion of the poor both of Jewish origin and proselytes.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewYou must notלֹ֣א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nostrip your vineyardוְכַרְמְךָ֙ (wə·ḵar·mə·ḵā)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 3754: A garden, vineyardbareתְעוֹלֵ֔ל (ṯə·‘ō·w·lêl)Verb - Piel - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 5953: To effect thoroughly, to glean, to overdo, maltreat, be saucy to, pain, imposeor gatherתְלַקֵּ֑ט (ṯə·laq·qêṭ)Verb - Piel - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 3950: To pick up, to gather, to gleanitsכַּרְמְךָ֖ (kar·mə·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 3754: A garden, vineyardfallen grapes.וּפֶ֥רֶט (ū·p̄e·reṭ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 6528: A stray, single berryLeaveתַּעֲזֹ֣ב (ta·‘ă·zōḇ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 5800: To loosen, relinquish, permitthemאֹתָ֔ם (’ō·ṯām)Direct object marker | third person masculine pluralStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casefor the poorלֶֽעָנִ֤י (le·‘ā·nî)Preposition-l, Article | Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 6041: Poor, afflicted, humbleand the sojourner.וְלַגֵּר֙ (wə·lag·gêr)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1616: A guest, a foreignerIאֲנִ֖י (’ă·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iam the LORDיְהוָ֥ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHyour God.אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeJump to PreviousAlien Bare Country Dropped Earth Fallen Foreigner Fruit Gather Glean Grape Grapes Leave Needy Pick Poor Second Sojourner Stranger Strip Time Vine-Garden Vineyard
