Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(14) For it is the life of all flesh . . . --Better, for the soul of all flesh is its blood, in, or through, its soul, that is, the sacredness of the blood arises from the fact that it contains the vital principle of all animal life. Or this clause may be rendered, for the life of all flesh is its blood in, or during, its life, that is, the life of all creatures consists in its blood; but only as long as the blood contains this life, for when it is dried up, or coagulated, the life has passed away from it.For the life of all flesh.--Better, for the soul of all flesh (see Leviticus 17:11), that is, even of those wild animals which, in contradistinction to the sacrificial quadrupeds, must not be offered upon the altar, the blood constitutes the vital principle.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewForכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthe lifeנֶ֣פֶשׁ (ne·p̄eš)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 5315: A soul, living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion of allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyfleshבָּשָׂ֗ר (bā·śār)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1320: Flesh, body, person, the pudenda of a, manis its blood.דָּמ֣וֹ (dā·mōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedTherefore I have toldוָֽאֹמַר֙ (wā·’ō·mar)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 559: To utter, saythe Israelites:לִבְנֵ֣י (liḇ·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonYou must notלֹ֣א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noeatתֹאכֵ֑לוּ (ṯō·ḵê·lū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 398: To eatthe bloodדַּ֥ם (dam)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedof anyכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyliving thing,בָּשָׂ֖ר (bā·śār)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1320: Flesh, body, person, the pudenda of a, manbecauseכִּ֣י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthe lifeנֶ֤פֶשׁ (ne·p̄eš)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 5315: A soul, living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion of allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyfleshבָּשָׂר֙ (bā·śār)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1320: Flesh, body, person, the pudenda of a, manis its blood;דָּמ֣וֹ (dā·mōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedwhoeverכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyeatsאֹכְלָ֖יו (’ō·ḵə·lāw)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 398: To eatit must be cut off.יִכָּרֵֽת׃ (yik·kā·rêṯ)Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3772: To cut, to destroy, consume, to covenantJump to PreviousBlood Children Creature Cut Eat Eateth Eats Flesh Identified Israel Israelites Kind Manner Thereof
