Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(30) For on that day shall the priest make an atonement.--Literally, For on that day he shall make atonement for you, which may either be the Lord, who is mentioned in the next clause, or, more probably, the high priest, who is mentioned five verses before. (See Leviticus 16:25, and especially Leviticus 16:32.)That ye may be clean . . . --Better, you shall be clean, &c. Because it is here said "you shall be clean from all your sins before the Lord," the administrators of the law in the time of Christ declared that only the sins which a man commits before, i.e., against the Lord, are atoned for on the Day of Atonement, but the sins which man commits against his fellow man are not forgiven on this day unless we have first satisfied our injured neighbour, and have obtained pardon from him. Again, he who sinneth in the hope that he will obtain absolution on the Day of Atonement, for him there is no forgiveness on this day.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewbecauseכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionon thisהַזֶּ֛ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatdayבַיּ֥וֹם (ḇay·yō·wm)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3117: A dayatonement will be madeיְכַפֵּ֥ר (yə·ḵap·pêr)Verb - Piel - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3722: To cover, to expiate, condone, to placate, cancelfor youעֲלֵיכֶ֖ם (‘ă·lê·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstto cleanseלְטַהֵ֣ר (lə·ṭa·hêr)Preposition-l | Verb - Piel - Infinitive constructStrong's 2891: To be clean or pureyou,אֶתְכֶ֑ם (’eṯ·ḵem)Direct object marker | second person masculine pluralStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseand you will be cleanתִּטְהָֽרוּ׃ (tiṭ·hā·rū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 2891: To be clean or purefrom allמִכֹּל֙ (mik·kōl)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyyour sinsחַטֹּ֣אתֵיכֶ֔ם (ḥaṭ·ṭō·ṯê·ḵem)Noun - feminine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderbeforeלִפְנֵ֥י (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The facethe LORD.יְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelJump to PreviousAtonement Clean Cleanse Free Maketh Priest Sin Sins
