Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) On which the lot fell to be the scapegoat.--Better, on which the lot "for Azazel" fell. This one with its distinctive scarlet badge was placed at the spot from whence he was sent away, and thus stood alive, not presented, before the Lord.To make an atonement with him.--Better, to make atonement for it, that is, it was placed before the Lord in order that it might receive expiation and sanctification, and thus be fitted for the sacred purposes it was destined to fulfil. (See Leviticus 16:16; Leviticus 16:18.)And to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.--Better, to send it to Azazel into the wilderness.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewBut the goatוְהַשָּׂעִ֗יר (wə·haś·śā·‘îr)Conjunctive waw, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 8163: Shaggy, a he-goat, a faunchosenעָלָ֨ה (‘ā·lāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, activelyby lotהַגּוֹרָל֙ (hag·gō·w·rāl)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1486: Lot -- a lot (for casting)to be the scapegoatלַעֲזָאזֵ֔ל (la·‘ă·zā·zêl)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 5799: Goat of departure, the scapegoatshall be presentedיָֽעֳמַד־ (yā·‘o·maḏ-)Verb - Hofal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5975: To stand, in various relationsaliveחַ֛י (ḥay)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2416: Alive, raw, fresh, strong, lifebeforeלִפְנֵ֥י (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The facethe LORDיְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelto make purificationלְכַפֵּ֣ר (lə·ḵap·pêr)Preposition-l | Verb - Piel - Infinitive constructStrong's 3722: To cover, to expiate, condone, to placate, cancelby sendingלְשַׁלַּ֥ח (lə·šal·laḥ)Preposition-l | Verb - Piel - Infinitive constructStrong's 7971: To send away, for, outit into the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּֽרָה׃ (ham·miḏ·bā·rāh)Article | Noun - masculine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 4057: A pasture, a desert, speechas the scapegoat.לַעֲזָאזֵ֖ל (la·‘ă·zā·zêl)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 5799: Goat of departure, the scapegoatJump to PreviousAlive Atonement Azazel Aza'zel Caused Chosen Departure Desert Fell Lot Making Placed Presented Scapegoat Scape-Goat Sending Sin Stand Used Waste Wilderness
