Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(15) And the priest shall make an atonement.--That is, for the sinful act which has brought about the infirmity. The severity with which people were treated who had contracted this disease may further be seen from the fact that they had to remain without the camp (Numbers 5:1-4). During the second Temple they were debarred from partaking of the Paschal meal, and were banished from the precincts of the holy city. Hence, when David in his great indignation wanted to invoke an imprecation upon his adversaries, he exclaimed "Let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue" (2Samuel 3:29).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThe priestהַכֹּהֵ֔ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestis to sacrificeוְעָשָׂ֤ה (wə·‘ā·śāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6213: To do, makethem,אֹתָם֙ (’ō·ṯām)Direct object marker | third person masculine pluralStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseoneאֶחָ֣ד (’e·ḥāḏ)Number - masculine singularStrong's 259: United, one, firstas a sin offeringחַטָּ֔את (ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderand the otherוְהָאֶחָ֖ד (wə·hā·’e·ḥāḏ)Conjunctive waw, Article | Number - masculine singularStrong's 259: United, one, firstas a burnt offering.עֹלָ֑ה (‘ō·lāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5930: Whole burnt offeringIn this way the priestהַכֹּהֵ֛ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestwill make atonementוְכִפֶּ֨ר (wə·ḵip·per)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3722: To cover, to expiate, condone, to placate, cancelforעָלָ֧יו (‘ā·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, against[the man] beforeלִפְנֵ֥י (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The facethe LORDיְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelbecause of his discharge.מִזּוֹבֽוֹ׃ (miz·zō·w·ḇōw)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2101: A seminal, menstrual fluxJump to PreviousAccount Atonement Behalf Burnt Burnt-Offering Discharge Flow Flux Issue Offer Offered Offering Sacrifice Sin Sin-Offering Way
