Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(5) And the priest shall look on him.--If at the end of a week there is no alteration in the symptoms, the case must be adjourned for another seven days. The same priest who inspected it at the first must examine it again, as another one could not tell whether it has spread or not. If the priest died in the interim, or was taken ill, another priest could examine the patient, but could not pronounce him unclean. If the seventh day happened to be a Sabbath or feast day, the case had to be put off to the following day.If the plague in his sight be at a stay.--Better, if the plagued spot remain the same in its colour, that is, if the suspicious spot which caused the individual to be shut up had not altered its complexion. The expression here translated "sight" is the same which is rightly rendered by "colour" in the Authorised Version in Leviticus 13:55 of this very chapter. (Comp. also Numbers 11:7.) It will thus be seen that though the affected spot had not spread, still it retained its unhealthy and suspicious complexion.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewOn the seventhהַשְּׁבִיעִי֒ (haš·šə·ḇî·‘î)Article | Number - ordinal masculine singularStrong's 7637: Seventh (an ordinal number)dayבַּיּ֣וֹם (bay·yō·wm)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3117: A daythe priestהַכֹּהֵן֮ (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestis to reexamine him,וְרָאָ֣הוּ (wə·rā·’ā·hū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 7200: To seeand ifוְהִנֵּ֤ה (wə·hin·nêh)Conjunctive waw | InterjectionStrong's 2009: Lo! behold!he seesבְּעֵינָ֔יו (bə·‘ê·nāw)Preposition-b | Noun - cdc | third person masculine singularStrong's 5869: An eye, a fountainthat the infectionהַנֶּ֙גַע֙ (han·ne·ḡa‘)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5061: Mark -- a blow, a spotis unchangedעָמַ֣ד (‘ā·maḏ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5975: To stand, in various relationsand has notלֹֽא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nospreadפָשָׂ֥ה (p̄ā·śāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6581: To spreadon the skin,בָּע֑וֹר (bā·‘ō·wr)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5785: Skin, hide, leatherthe priestהַכֹּהֵ֛ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: Priestmust isolateוְהִסְגִּיר֧וֹ (wə·his·gî·rōw)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 5462: To shut up, to surrenderhim for anotherשֵׁנִֽית׃ (šê·nîṯ)Number - ordinal feminine singularStrong's 8145: Second (an ordinal number)sevenשִׁבְעַ֥ת (šiḇ·‘aṯ)Number - masculine singular constructStrong's 7651: Seven, seven times, a week, an indefinite numberdays.יָמִ֖ים (yā·mîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3117: A dayJump to PreviousAppearance Arrested Changed Checked Disease Examine Eyes Hasn't Increased Infection Isolate Isolation Opinion Plague Second Seven Seventh Shut Sight Size Skin Sore Spread Spreadeth Time Unchanged Worse
