Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) To go down.--If thou fear to make the attack at once, without still further encouragement. Let it be borne in mind that the courage required by Gideon and his men was in many respects far beyond that of the much more vaunted 300 at Thermopylae--(1) because they were to attack, not to defend; (2) because they were to attack a host in the plain, not to hold a narrow valley; (3) because they had not a large number of allies and attendants with them, as the 300 Spartans had (Grote's Greece, v. 103, 121).Phurah thy servant.--The name Phurah means "branch"; the word for "servant" is literally boy, but here means the armour-bearer. The classical reader will recall the night-raid of Diomedes and Odysseus into the camp of the Thracians at Troy (Il. x. 220, et seqq.).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewBut ifוְאִם־ (wə·’im-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, notyouאַתָּ֖ה (’at·tāh)Pronoun - second person masculine singularStrong's 859: Thou and thee, ye and youare afraidיָרֵ֥א (yā·rê)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 3373: Fearing, reverentto [do so],לָרֶ֑דֶת (lā·re·ḏeṯ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 3381: To come or go down, descendthen go downרֵ֥ד (rêḏ)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine singularStrong's 3381: To come or go down, descendtoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe campהַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ (ham·ma·ḥă·neh)Article | Noun - common singularStrong's 4264: An encampment, an armywith your servantנַעַרְךָ֖ (na·‘ar·ḵā)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 5288: A boy, lad, youth, retainerPurahוּפֻרָ֥ה (ū·p̄u·rāh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6513: Purah -- a servant of GideonJump to PreviousAfraid Attack Camp Host Phurah Purah Servant Tents Young
