Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(24, 25) Behold, here is my daughter . . .--The main horror of these verses lies, and is meant to lie, in the nameless infamy to which these men had sunk, of whom we can only say,"Non ragionam di lor ma guarda e passa."But we must not omit to notice that the conduct of the old man and the Levite, though it is not formally condemned, speaks of the existence of a very rudimentary morality, a selfishness, and a low estimate of the rights and sacred dignity of women, which shows from what depths the world has emerged. If it was possible to frustrate the vile assault of these wretches in this way it must have been possible to frustrate it altogether. There is something terribly repulsive in the selfishness which could thus make a Levite sacrifice a defenceless woman, and that woman his wife, for a whole night to such brutalisation. The remark of St. Gregory is very weighty: "Minus peccatum admittere ut gravius evitetur est a scelere victimas offerre Deo."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewLook,הִנֵּה֩ (hin·nêh)InterjectionStrong's 2009: Lo! behold!let me bring outאוֹצִֽיאָה־ (’ō·w·ṣî·’āh-)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect Cohortative - first person common singularStrong's 3318: To go, bring, out, direct and proximmy virginהַבְּתוּלָ֜ה (hab·bə·ṯū·lāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 1330: A virgin, sometimes, a bridedaughterבִתִּ֨י (ḇit·tî)Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 1323: A daughterand the man’s concubine,וּפִֽילַגְשֵׁ֗הוּ (ū·p̄î·laḡ·šê·hū)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6370: A concubine, a paramourand you can useוְעַנּ֣וּ (wə·‘an·nū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 6031: To be bowed down or afflictedthemאוֹתָ֔ם (’ō·w·ṯām)Direct object marker | third person masculine pluralStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseand doוַעֲשׂ֣וּ (wa·‘ă·śū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 6213: To do, makewith themלָהֶ֔ם (lā·hem)Preposition | third person masculine pluralStrong's Hebrew as you wish.הַטּ֖וֹב (haṭ·ṭō·wḇ)Article | Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2896: Pleasant, agreeable, goodBut do notלֹ֣א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nodoתַעֲשׂ֔וּ (ṯa·‘ă·śū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 6213: To do, makesuchהַזֹּֽאת׃ (haz·zōṯ)Article | Pronoun - feminine singularStrong's 2063: Hereby in it, likewise, the one other, same, she, so much, such deed, that, a vileהַנְּבָלָ֥ה (han·nə·ḇā·lāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5039: Foolishness, wickedness, a crime, punishmentthingדְּבַ֖ר (də·ḇar)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causeto thisהַזֶּה֙ (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatman.”וְלָאִ֤ישׁ (wə·lā·’îš)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personJump to PreviousAct Commit Concubine Daughter Humble Maiden Please Ravish Seemeth Seems Servant-Wife Use Vile Virgin Wanton Whatever Wish
