Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(32) On the second day.--With this fact we may connect two other facts of later history. When Sennacherib, king of Assyria, "came up against all the fenced cities of Judah and took them" (2Kings 18:13), although he "laid siege to Lachish, and all his power with him" (2Chronicles 32:9), he had to abandon the siege (2Kings 19:8). Again, when Nebuchadnezzar invaded the kingdom of Judah in the reign of Zedekiah, the last king, we read ( Jeremiah 34:7) of his army fighting "against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and against Azekah, for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah." All these notices of Lachish point to its being a fortress of considerable strength. And the undesigned and indirect agreement of these three passages, which lie so far asunder, is worthy of observation.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAnd the LORDיְהוָ֨ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israeldeliveredוַיִּתֵּן֩ (way·yit·tên)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setLachishלָכִ֜ישׁ (lā·ḵîš)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3923: Lachish -- a Canaanite city Southwest of Jerusaleminto the handsבְּיַ֣ד (bə·yaḏ)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 3027: A handof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descand Joshua capturedוַֽיִּלְכְּדָהּ֙ (way·yil·kə·ḏāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 3920: To catch, to capture, occupy, to choose, to cohereit on the secondהַשֵּׁנִ֔י (haš·šê·nî)Article | Number - ordinal masculine singularStrong's 8145: Second (an ordinal number)day.בַּיּ֣וֹם (bay·yō·wm)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3117: A dayHe struck downוַיַּכֶּ֣הָ (way·yak·ke·hā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 5221: To strikeallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe peopleהַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ (han·ne·p̄eš)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5315: A soul, living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion with the sword,חֶ֔רֶב (ḥe·reḇ)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2719: Drought, a cutting instrument, as a, knife, swordjust asכְּכֹ֥ל (kə·ḵōl)Preposition-k | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyhe had doneעָשָׂ֖ה (‘ā·śāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6213: To do, maketo Libnah.לְלִבְנָֽה׃ (lə·liḇ·nāh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3841: Libnah -- a city in soutwest Judah, also a place in the wildernessJump to PreviousCaptured City Delivered Edge Hand Handed Hands Israel Joshua Lachish Putting Second Smote Souls Struck Sword Therein
