Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) Flee out of the midst of Babylon.--The words reproduce the call of Jeremiah 50:8 with a fresh motive. The city was doomed. It was ill done for those who had not been guilty of her sins to involve themselves in her destruction. The call is reproduced, as referring to the mystical Babylon, in Revelation 18:4.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewFleeנֻ֣סוּ ׀ (nu·sū)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 5127: To flit, vanish awayfromמִתּ֣וֹךְ (mit·tō·wḵ)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 8432: A bisection, the centreBabylon;בָּבֶ֗ל (bā·ḇel)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 894: Babylon -- an eastern Mediterranean empire and its capital cityescapeוּמַלְּטוּ֙ (ū·mal·lə·ṭū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 4422: To be smooth, to escape, to release, rescue, to bring forth young, emit sparkswith yourאִ֣ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personlives!נַפְשׁ֔וֹ (nap̄·šōw)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 5315: A soul, living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion Do notאַל־ (’al-)AdverbStrong's 408: Notbe destroyedתִּדַּ֖מּוּ (tid·dam·mū)Verb - Nifal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 1826: To be dumb, to be astonished, to stop, to perishin her punishment.בַּעֲוֺנָ֑הּ (ba·‘ă·wō·nāh)Preposition-b | Noun - common singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 5771: Iniquity, guilt, punishment for iniquityForכִּי֩ (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionthisהִיא֙ (hî)Pronoun - third person feminine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, areis the timeעֵ֨ת (‘êṯ)Noun - common singular constructStrong's 6256: Time, now, whenof the LORD’sלַֽיהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelvengeance;נְקָמָ֥ה (nə·qā·māh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5360: AvengementHeה֥וּא (hū)Pronoun - third person masculine singularStrong's 1931: He, self, the same, this, that, as, arewill payמְשַׁלֵּ֖ם (mə·šal·lêm)Verb - Piel - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 7999: To be safe, to be, completed, to be friendly, to reciprocateherלָֽהּ׃ (lāh)Preposition | third person feminine singularStrong's Hebrew what she deserves.גְּמ֕וּל (gə·mūl)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1576: Treatment, an act, service, requitalJump to PreviousBabylon Cut Deliver Deserves Destroyed Flee Flight Iniquity Jehovah's Life Midst Pay Punishment Recompence Recompense Render Rendering Requital Run Save Sins Soul Time Vengeance
