Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(25) Because thou hast sent letters in thy name . . .--The letters were probably sent through the envoys named in Jeremiah 29:3 on their return from Babylon. Their object was to urge Zephaniah, who appears in 2Kings 25:18 as the Sagan, or second priest, to exercise his authority to restrain Jeremiah from prophesying, and to punish him as a false prophet. It was an attempt to turn the tables on him for the manner in which he had thwarted the plans of the party of revolt at Babylon. The part taken by Zephaniah in acting for the king when he wished to consult Jeremiah (Jeremiah 21:1), and imploring his intercession (Jeremiah 37:3), makes it probable that he endeavoured to maintain a neutral Gamaliel-like position between the two parties, and had seemed so lukewarm and temporising that he was open to the influence of threats. On the capture of Jerusalem by Nebuzaradan he was taken prisoner and slain (Jeremiah 52:24-27).Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“This is whatכֹּֽה־ (kōh-)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe LORDיְהוָ֧ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelof Hosts,צְבָא֛וֹת (ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ)Noun - common pluralStrong's 6635: A mass of persons, reg, organized for, war, a campaignthe Godאֱלֹהֵ֥י (’ĕ·lō·hê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descsays:אָמַ֞ר (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayIn your own nameבְשִׁמְכָ֜ה (ḇə·šim·ḵāh)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 8034: A nameyouאַתָּה֩ (’at·tāh)Pronoun - second person masculine singularStrong's 859: Thou and thee, ye and youhave sent outשָׁלַ֨חְתָּ (šā·laḥ·tā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 7971: To send away, for, outlettersסְפָרִ֗ים (sə·p̄ā·rîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 5612: A missive, document, writing, booktoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe peopleהָעָם֙ (hā·‘ām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockof Jerusalem,בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (bî·rū·šā·lim)Preposition-b | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3389: Jerusalem -- probably 'foundation of peace', capital city of all Israeltoוְאֶל־ (wə·’el-)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe priestהַכֹּהֵ֔ן (hak·kō·hên)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3548: PriestZephaniahצְפַנְיָ֤ה (ṣə·p̄an·yāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6846: Zephaniah -- 'Yah has treasured', four Israelitessonבֶן־ (ḇen-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Maaseiah,מַֽעֲשֵׂיָה֙ (ma·‘ă·śê·yāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4641: Maaseiah -- 'work of Yah', the name of a number of Israelitesand toוְאֶ֥ל (wə·’el)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe priests,הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (hak·kō·hă·nîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3548: Priestsaying:לֵאמֹ֑ר (lê·mōr)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 559: To utter, sayJump to PreviousArmies Hosts Israel Jerusalem Letters Maaseiah Priest Priests Speaketh Speaks Zephaniah
