Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(5) Turn ye again now . . .--The sum and substance of the work of all true prophets has always been found, it need scarcely be said, in the call to repentance and conversion; but there is, perhaps, a special reference to the substance of their preaching as recorded in 2Kings 17:13. The words are interesting as showing that Jeremiah was probably seconded in his work by other prophets whose names have not come down to us.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew[The prophets] told [you],לֵאמֹ֗ר (lê·mōr)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 559: To utter, say‘Turnשֽׁוּבוּ־ (šū·ḇū-)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againnow,נָ֞א (nā)InterjectionStrong's 4994: I pray', 'now', 'then'eachאִ֣ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personof you,לְמִן־ (lə·min-)Preposition-lStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out offrom your evilהָֽרָעָה֙ (hā·rā·‘āh)Article | Adjective - feminine singularStrong's 7451: Bad, evilwaysמִדַּרְכּ֤וֹ (mid·dar·kōw)Preposition-m | Noun - common singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1870: A road, a course of life, mode of actionand evilוּמֵרֹ֣עַ (ū·mê·rō·a‘)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-m | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 7455: Badness, evildeeds,מַעַלְלֵיכֶ֔ם (ma·‘al·lê·ḵem)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 4611: A deed, practiceand you can dwellוּשְׁבוּ֙ (ū·šə·ḇū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryinעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe landהָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (hā·’ă·ḏā·māh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 127: Ground, landthatאֲשֶׁ֨ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatthe LORD has givenנָתַ֧ן (nā·ṯan)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setto youלָכֶ֖ם (lā·ḵem)Preposition | second person masculine pluralStrong's Hebrew and to your fathersוְלַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם (wə·la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 1: Fatherforeverעוֹלָ֖ם (‘ō·w·lām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5769: Concealed, eternity, frequentatively, alwaysandוְעַד־ (wə·‘aḏ-)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whileever.עוֹלָֽם׃ (‘ō·w·lām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5769: Concealed, eternity, frequentatively, alwaysJump to PreviousDeeds Doings Dwell Evermore Evil Fathers Forefathers Forever Forevermore Ground Practices Times Turn Way Ways
