Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(3) Execute ye judgment.--As the Hebrew verb is not identical with that in Jeremiah 21:12, and implies a less formal act, it might be better to render it, do ye judgment . . .Do no wrong . . .--The Hebrew order connects both verbs with the substantives--to the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, do no wrong, no violence--and gives the latter the emphasis of position. The whole verse paints but too vividly a reign which presented the very reverse of all that the prophet describes as belonging to a righteous king.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThis is whatכֹּ֣ה ׀ (kōh)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe LORDיְהוָ֗ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelsays:אָמַ֣ר (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayAdministerעֲשׂ֤וּ (‘ă·śū)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 6213: To do, makejusticeמִשְׁפָּט֙ (miš·pāṭ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4941: A verdict, a sentence, formal decree, divine law, penalty, justice, privilege, styleand righteousness.וּצְדָקָ֔ה (ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 6666: Rightness, subjectively, objectivelyRescueוְהַצִּ֥ילוּ (wə·haṣ·ṣî·lū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 5337: To strip, plunder, deliver oneself, be delivered, snatch away, deliverthe victim of robberyגָז֖וּל (ḡā·zūl)Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - masculine singularStrong's 1497: To pluck off, to flay, strip, robfrom the handמִיַּ֣ד (mî·yaḏ)Preposition-m | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 3027: A handof his oppressor.עָשׁ֑וֹק (‘ā·šō·wq)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6216: Oppressor, extortionerDo noאַל־ (’al-)AdverbStrong's 408: Notwrongתֹּנוּ֙ (tō·nū)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 3238: To rage, be violent, to suppress, to maltreator violenceתַּחְמֹ֔סוּ (taḥ·mō·sū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 2554: To treat violently or wrongto the foreigner,וְגֵר֩ (wə·ḡêr)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1616: A guest, a foreignerthe fatherless,יָת֨וֹם (yā·ṯō·wm)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3490: A bereaved personor the widow.וְאַלְמָנָ֤ה (wə·’al·mā·nāh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 490: A widow, a desolate placeDo notאַל־ (’al-)AdverbStrong's 408: Notshedתִּשְׁפְּכ֖וּ (tiš·pə·ḵū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 8210: To spill forth, to expend, to sprawl outinnocentנָקִ֔י (nā·qî)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 5355: Clean, free from, exemptbloodוְדָ֣ם (wə·ḏām)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1818: Blood, of man, an animal, the juice of the grape, bloodshedin thisהַזֶּֽה׃ (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatplace.בַּמָּק֥וֹם (bam·mā·qō·wm)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4725: A standing, a spot, a conditionJump to PreviousBlood Deliver Execute Fatherless Foreigner Hand Innocent Judgment Justice Laid Oppressor Righteousness Robbed Shed Spoiled Stranger Violence Waste Widow Wrong
